"Scars on the Neck"

Shoemaker #32, Scott's #41vi The "Vampire Bite" aka The "Scars on the Neck". This variety is one of the more popular three cent CPVs. When the variety first appeared in 1892 it was almost the shape of two diamonds in the neck of the small queen and two large blobs to the left of the right 3. After three years of printing, the plate damage had diminished to two very small triangles, like vampire bites, in the Queen's neck and the damage to the left of the right 3 had worn so that area appeared to be almost normal. The examples on this page illustrate the plate wear over the various printings.
